State Representative David Martin of Davison praised the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) for granting a permit to Enbridge Energy to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel and replace the segment of Line 5 that runs under the Straits of Mackinac. The decision by the MPSC was applauded by Rep. Martin, who emphasized the importance of sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy for the people of Michigan.

In a statement, Rep. Martin expressed his support for the commission's decision, stating, "The Michigan Public Service Commission made the right decision. The people of Michigan need sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy to meet their everyday needs, and constructing the Great Lakes Tunnel is a significant step toward securing our state's energy future. Moreover, this project means good-paying Michigan jobs that will fuel our economy."

Line 5 has been in operation for nearly seven decades, serving as a crucial conduit for propane that heats many homes in Michigan and supplying regional refineries with gas, diesel, and jet fuels. However, concerns over the pipeline's safety have been raised, particularly regarding the possibility of an anchor strike. Enbridge's proposed investment of $500 million in the construction of the tunnel aims to address these concerns and enhance operational safety. The tunnel will also provide access for ongoing inspections and maintenance work.

Despite the MPSC's approval, Enbridge is still awaiting a permitting decision from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before construction can commence. The decision by the MPSC is seen as a significant milestone in the process, bringing the Line 5 tunnel one step closer to becoming a reality.

The construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel is expected to not only ensure the continued supply of energy to Michigan but also create job opportunities for the state. Rep. Martin highlighted the positive economic impact of the project, stating, "This project means good-paying Michigan jobs that will fuel our economy."

The approval of the permit by the MPSC and the potential construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel represents a significant development in Michigan's energy landscape. With the emphasis on sustainability, reliability, and affordability, the project aims to secure the state's energy future while creating economic opportunities for its residents. The decision by the MPSC is a testament to the importance of balancing energy needs with environmental and safety considerations.
