State Rep. David Martin has urged action on a plan aimed at boosting government transparency in Michigan by expanding the scope of open records laws. Martin emphasized the importance of the plan, stating, “I have absolutely nothing to hide, and none of our other elected officials should either. It’s well past time to make it easier for the people we represent to access important information about the work we’re doing on their behalf.”

Martin's plan, which includes House Bills 5422-5427, proposes significant changes to improve access to public records and enhance transparency in government operations. The plan seeks to subject legislators, the governor, and lieutenant governor to the same Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements that other elected officials and employees in the state are expected to follow.

Furthermore, the plan calls for the creation of the Open Government Commission to oversee FOIA requests and appeals, strengthen the public's ability to challenge government information withholding, add accountability measures for FOIA exemptions, streamline FOIA procedures, and establish clear responsibilities for FOIA coordinators. Additionally, the plan increases penalties for public bodies that fail to comply with FOIA requests.

Martin highlighted the shortcomings of the current transparency laws in Michigan, stating, “Government records, especially those of our highest-ranking officials, are kept hidden from public view, while legitimate requests for transparency are met with bureaucratic hurdles.” He emphasized the need to enhance transparency by clarifying, modernizing, and expanding the Freedom of Information Act.

The plan has been referred to the Government Operations Committee, where bills are often stalled. Martin expressed his concern over the lack of action, emphasizing that Michigan residents are being failed by the current transparency laws. He stressed the importance of cutting through bureaucratic obstacles to bring transparency to the forefront and ensure that the people of Michigan have access to the information needed to hold their government accountable.

Sunshine Week, observed each March, underscores the significance of transparency and accountability in government. This year, the occasion falls on March 10-16, serving as a reminder of the critical need for openness and transparency in government operations.
