Mott Community College issued the following announcement.
Mott Community College Honors College student and Campus Clown, Rebekah Harmon, of Flint, will receive the 2020 Commitment to Service Student Award from Campus Compact for Michigan. Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education.
“Rebekah is truly deserving of this recognition,” said Dr. Brian Ivory, Director of the MCC Honors College and founder of the Mott Campus Clown Troupe. “She has a passion for service and it shows in her dedication to our troupe mission and her clowning exuberance,” he added.
Harmon was nomiated for her long term participation in the Mott Campus Clowns, a trained clown troupe made up of honor’s students who are serious about the issue of bullying. Eight years ago, the group launched an anti-bullying comedy magic show to help elementary school students deal with, and prevent, bullying. The troupes performs at schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and public events in Flint, Detroit and Philadelphia, and for the State of Michigan Special Olypics.
Harmon was a member of the Campus Clowns for three semesters, not only performing at Special Olympics, the Flint Children’s Museum, the Lansing Silver Bells in the City Parade, and the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade, but also training new Campus Clowns.
“My experience as Curly-B is something that I believe has changed who I am,” said Harmon of her clown character. “Interacting with the community has given me more confidence, patience and kindness. I have realized how much of an impact I am able to have, and this has lit a fire within me to want to do more for the community,” she said.
