The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is assured of having a different makeup, long before the general election is held in November.
There will be at least four new faces on the board following the Democratic primary, as three of the incumbents opted not to seek another term and the fourth failed to carry the ballot for reelection. The biggest news from the primary was the results from District 8, MLive reported.
Incumbent Commissioner Ted Henry (D-Clayton Township) lost to Debra Newman, a retired police officer. Newman will advance to the general election and face Republican Rod Shumaker, a former Clayton Township supervisor, who was uncontested.
In District 2, incumbent Brenda Clack sat out the race. Charles Winfrey won a three-person primary and won the seat, as there is no Republican opponent. Among Winfrey’s opponents were Michael Clack, Brenda’s son, and Corey Lockett.
Democrat Domonique Clemons knocked off Donald Wright to advance to the general election and face Republican Anthony O’Neal Wilson for Kim Courts’ vacated District 4 seat. In District 9, David Martin’s seat will be taken by either Democrat Gary Peppin or Republican Matthew Smith.
There are other seats in play with incumbents seeking another tour of duty, MLive reported. One commissioner who is assured of another term is Bryant Nolden (D-Flint), who ran unopposed in District 1 in both the primary and general election. The same cannot be said in District 3, where incumbent Ellen Ellenburg (D-Burton) has opponent Republican Gary Goetzinger waiting in the general election. The identical scenario awaits in District 5 as incumbent Mark Young (D-Grand Blanc) has Republican Sean Trowbridge standing between him and another term.
There are two other contested races for voters to brush up on in preparation for the general election. Shaun Shumaker (R-Fenton Township) is seeking another term against Democrat challenger Timothy John Draeger. District 7 features Board Chairman Martin Couisneau (D-Thetford Township), who will face Republican Meredith Faye Davis.
The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. To vote in that election, Michigan residents must be registered by Oct. 19.
