GENESEE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT: Flu Vaccine Myth #1

Document

Genesee County Health Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.

While we continue to promote flu shots – this month, we are going to dispel some common myths about flu vaccination. There are so many misconceptions about the safety and effectiveness of flu vaccinations and these are often the reasons why people choose to skip their yearly flu shot.

*Flu Vaccine Myth #1: People can become ill with flu from receiving a flu vaccine.

This is false. You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Flu vaccinations are made with either killed flu virus or a single protein from the flu virus. The nasal spray vaccine contains live, weakened virus – which is also unable to cause an illness.

It is possible to become ill with flu after the flu vaccine as it takes 2 weeks for your immune system to build up immunity. Before or during this time, you may have come into contact with a flu virus and may become ill because your body does not yet have immunity built up to the virus.

Getting a flu shot, washing hands often, avoiding contact with those who are sick, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces are the best ways to avoid becoming sick with flu.
