City of Owosso issued the following announcement on Jan 27.
The Owosso Police Department mourns the passing of retired Police Chief Nelson Gates.
Chief Gates joined OPD in May 1966 following service in the U.S. Army. In 1988 Nelson was appointed Chief and served in the position for fourteen years until his retirement in 2002.
Rest in peace Chief Gates.
