City recognizes September 20 as "National Voter Registration Day"

The City of Saginaw will observe National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 20. This nonpartisan civic holiday provides information regarding how to register to vote and celebrates the nation’s democracy and right to be heard during the election period.

National Voter Registration day was established to broaden awareness of voter

registration opportunities to citizens who, otherwise, may not register to vote. United States Census data from 2020 shows that about 1 in 4 eligible voters are not registered to vote. National Voter Registration Day strives to reach the millions of Americans who are unable to vote due to missed registration deadlines, outdated registration, or a lack of knowledge on how to register. Residents can exercise their right to be heard at the ballot box, and it begins with registering to vote.

The Saginaw City Clerk’s Office, located at 1315 S. Washington Ave Room 102, will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist citizens who would like to register to vote or need to update their current voter registration. This includes citizens who have moved since the last election and those who have changed their name.

The requirements to be an eligible voter are as follows:

  • United States citizen and Michigan resident
  • 18 years of age
  • Not currently serving a jail or prison sentence
The following documents can be submitted for proof of residency:

  • Driver’s license
  • Bills; bank statements
  • Paycheck; government check
“The next local election will be November 8, 2022. Now is the time to stop in the Clerk’s office to register or update your registration information. We are here to assist citizens and answer any questions they may have about registration, polling locations, or other general election questions.” – Janet Santos, City Clerk.
