WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) issued the following statement responding to the ongoing fighting in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary force:
“I strongly condemn the ongoing violence in Sudan, especially against civilians, and call for both sides to adhere to a cease-fire. I support a transition to democracy in Sudan, and this undermines that effort. A transition to a free and democratic Sudan under civilian rule will help provide lasting peace and stability for the Sudanese people. I urge General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Degalo to take immediate steps to end this conflict, protect civilians from harm and ensure humanitarian relief can reach civilians uninterrupted during this crisis.”
Congressman Kildee has led efforts in Congress to support Sudan's transition to democracy and civilian rule. In March 2022, Congressman Kildee led a bipartisan letter, supported by Democrats and Republicans, to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power requesting action to support Sudan’s endangered democratic transition.
