State Rep. David Martin is leading a new initiative aimed at addressing the threat posed by international crime rings targeting Michigan families. The plan, introduced as House Bill 5650, seeks to increase penalties for crimes committed by individuals who enter the country illegally to benefit transnational crime organizations.

Speaking about the need for swift action, Martin emphasized, “Brazen criminals see lax federal immigration laws as a new opportunity to expand their criminal enterprise, and that can’t be tolerated. We must act swiftly and decisively to crack down on these offenders, safeguarding our neighborhoods and protecting Michigan families.”

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard highlighted the severity of the situation, warning about an international crime ring targeting high-end homes in the area. He noted that the criminals have stolen millions of dollars’ worth of items from residents in wealthy neighborhoods.

The bill proposed by Rep. Martin aims to address the increase in violent crimes committed by illegal aliens in Michigan. It includes provisions to enhance penalties for felonies committed to benefit transnational crime organizations and for offenses committed by individuals who return to the country illegally after being deported.

In light of recent incidents involving illegal aliens, including murder, solicitation of minors, and sexual assault, Martin stressed the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of Michigan citizens. He expressed concern over policies proposed by the Whitmer administration that offer taxpayer-funded assistance to individuals who may have entered the country illegally.

Martin reiterated the need to crack down on crime and ensure that state policies align with lawful immigration practices. House Bill 5650 has been enrolled with the House and is set to be referred to a committee for further review next week.
