A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Genesee County Election Division on October 30, 2024. The request was made by us at Genesee News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request specifically sought access to records pertaining to pre-election testing of voting machines. We asked for these records in an electronic format, preferably as PDF files. The requested information includes the date of the test, the manufacturer of the machine, the model number of the machine, and whether each machine passed or failed its test.
As a media organization, we believe that access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
We continue to strive towards delivering accurate and timely news about local government affairs to our readership. As such, gaining access to these records will be instrumental in shedding light on the state of election preparedness in Genesee County ahead of upcoming elections.
