Fire investigators are attempting to determine what caused a deadly fire early Tuesday morning in Flat Rock.
Firefighters were called just before 2 a.m. to the home on Matilda Avenue, which is in the area of Telegraph and Vreeland roads. Firefighters found the home engulfed in flames.
The victim, a 69-year-old man, was found dead in the aftermath of the fire.
Officials are working to determine what caused the fire. They believe it was accidental. The Wayne County Medical Examiner will determine a cause of death.
“Very, very frustrating. It’s probably one of the worst case scenarios as a firefighter you’re going to face,” said Flat Rock Mayor Mark Hammond, who used to be a firefighter. “One, you want to save lives. That’s what we all go to school for, that’s what we train for, that’s what we’re here for. We want to make sure people get out, and when you are trying to rescue somebody it’s very frustrating when you can’t.”
