WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) issued the following statement after he voted against the so-called “Limit, Save, Grow Act”, which independent economists have estimated will mean 780,000 fewer jobs in the economy:
“Today’s bill is not a serious proposal. It is a wish list of extreme cuts that would eliminate jobs, hurt our economy and take away health care from veterans. Republicans should not be playing political games with the full faith and credit of the United States.
“The debt limit is about paying America’s existing bills—not approving new spending. Congress has dozens of times previously raised the debt limit, under both Republican and Democratic presidents. Under former President Trump, Republicans ran up trillions of dollars of debt and voted to raise the debt limit three times.
“Congress should lift the debt ceiling without further delay. Once we take the threat of economic crisis off the table, Republicans and Democrats must together to develop a thoughtful, responsible national budget that invests in working families and protects Social Security and Medicare.”
Congressman Kildee today sent a letter with nearly 200 members of Congress asking that House Republicans raise the debt limit in a bipartisan way, without holding the economy hostage.
