WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) On May 25, 2023, announced new federal funding to clean up blighted properties throughout Bay City, including the Midland Street Business District. This will help remove public health risks, reduce crime and prepare Bay City neighborhoods for new economic development.
“Cleaning up blighted properties helps strengthen neighborhoods, reduce crime and increase property values for those who live nearby,” said Congressman Kildee. “I am pleased to have helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help clean up these properties, making way for potential new economic development in Bay City. In Congress, I will continue to secure federal funds to help mid-Michigan communities thrive.”
Congressman Kildee helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which invests $1.5 billion in the EPA’s Brownfields Program to clean up blighted and polluted sites in Michigan and across the nation. Bay City’s award will capitalize a loan fund operated by the city of Bay City, to support the cleanup of blighted and abandoned properties. Its focus will be on redevelopment in the Midland Street Business District and targeted properties on Bay City’s east side, including the former Surath Scrap Yard and former Dow Chemical Site on N. Water Street.
“Bay City is committed to bringing historic and vacant properties back into beneficial use. We are so thankful for the efforts of Congressman Kildee and the EPA to help us secure funding for this endeavor. The grant will be used on some areas of the City we have prioritized including the areas around Midland Street, Columbus Avenue and the South End,” said Dana Muscott, City Manager, City of Bay City.
“We would like to thank Congressman Kildee for his efforts in securing these funds for our community. Due to the long industrial legacy communities like ours have throughout the region and state, brownfield remediation and dollars to help fund it are critical to reuse these former industrial sites for the continued long-term benefit for our community,” said Trevor Keyes, President and CEO, Bay Future, Inc.
Congressman Kildee has long advocated for the elimination of blight across mid-Michigan. In December, Kildee secured two grants, totaling $6.4 million, to help the Genesee County Land Bank Authority and Saginaw County Land Bank Authority demolish abandoned and blighted properties.
