State Representative David W. Martin, a Republican from Davison, led the Michigan House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism in passing two resolutions aimed at safeguarding the Great Lakes and American energy resources. As chair of the committee, Martin expressed his strong support for both measures.

House Resolution 77 calls on Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to resume work on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project. This project is intended to prevent the spread of invasive Asian carp into the Great Lakes. Despite an intergovernmental agreement between Michigan and Illinois in 2020 to finalize this plan, Governor Pritzker paused the project in February 2025 due to concerns over federal funding. However, President Trump has since offered support for the initiative, addressing these financial obstacles. The resolution urges Illinois to honor its commitment made in 2020 with Michigan and proceed with construction.

“The Brandon Road Project is critical for the defense of our Great Lakes from Asian carp,” stated Martin. “It’s both extremely important, and time-sensitive, that Gov. Pritzker honors Illinois’ agreement to get this project underway. The Great Lakes hold a special place in all our hearts, and I will always stand up to protect them from invasive species.”

Additionally, Martin's committee addressed House Resolution 91, which endorses President Trump’s energy policies that have enabled emergency permitting for the Enbridge Line 5 tunnel project.

“Our state and our country are stronger when we have a powerful and well-maintained energy infrastructure,” said Martin. “Line 5’s new tunnel will continue to provide necessary amounts of oil and natural gas to our state and lower the cost of energy for our residents. If we care about keeping energy costs reasonable for our residents, as lawmakers, it is fundamental we support Line 5 and get this project underway as soon as possible.”

Both resolutions successfully passed through the committee on Wednesday afternoon. House Resolution 77 was approved on the House floor immediately after the committee session, while House Resolution 91 is scheduled for consideration next week.
