State Representative David W. Martin expressed gratitude to President Trump for his administration's commitment to preventing Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. The federal government has issued a memo supporting the $1.15 billion Brandon Road Interbasin Project, a collaborative effort between Illinois and Michigan designed to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Martin emphasized the importance of safeguarding Michigan's lakes and waterways, describing them as "among our state’s most valuable natural treasures." He noted that this initiative should transcend partisan politics and garner support from all Michigan residents.
The project initially gained approval in 2020 but faced delays earlier this year when Illinois Governor JB Pritzker paused it, citing uncertainties about continued backing from the new administration. With President Trump's recent affirmation of support and funding, Martin is urging Pritzker to proceed with construction without delay.
"As chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism," Martin stated, "I believe I have a duty to defend our Great Lakes against invasive species."
